Ready, steady, bake at Wallscourt Farm

It was ready, steady, bake at Wallscourt Farm Academy for two very lucky pupils.

Pupils Max and Oliver, supported by Agnes Galla, the school’s 1:1 Learning Partner, baked a delicious chocolate cake with chocolate icing completely from scratch.

This fortnightly baking activity gives pupils the opportunity to practise important language and mathematical skills outside of the classroom environment. During the session, pupils focus on reading and understanding a recipe, measuring and mixing ingredients, and reading scales accurately.

Alongside these academic skills, pupils also learn valuable life skills such as the basics of food hygiene, kneading and cutting ingredients, and washing up after cooking. The activity encourages concentration, teamwork and independence while creating a tasty end result.

While transferring the cake safely to and from the oven was carried out by Agnes, the rest of the process showcased the boys’ growing baking talents.

Max and Oliver thoroughly enjoyed the experience, learned a great deal, and were proud of the cake they created. The school hopes their families also enjoyed the scrumptious results.

Agnes Galla said: “Baking together is a fantastic way for pupils to build confidence while practising practical maths and reading skills.

“Max and Oliver worked really hard, followed the recipe brilliantly and were very proud of the cake they made.”
